Sweet On You: A Break Down

Sweet On You is my latest contemporary romance release:

As a single mother, Asante Parker has spent the past 5 years getting her business and her life back together after her last relationship left her empty in more ways than one. Now she has a teenager who is starting to blossom into her own and leaving her behind. Asante wonders, even after her heartbreak, is it time to find love again?

Issac Clark wants one thing: a family to call his own. Years ago his family turned their back on him, so now he’s determined to create the family hes been craving. With the right woman, of course.

Their love of cupcakes brings them together and soon they have all the ingredients for the sweetest love story.

What is something you would say to convince people to read this story?

I would say that if you want a love story that includes an emotional journey of love, family, overcoming anxiety and finding love in yourself before you can find it in others, then pick up this book. Also, have cupcakes on hand, because you will want some when you finish!

What inspired me to write this story?

I wanted to write about being a single mother, similar to myself, who had sort of given up on love because she felt like her past experiences took away from her being the best mother that she could be. I wanted this story to show the inside struggles of motherhood and how lonely it can be at times, as well as how sometimes mothers put their lives on hold for the safety of their children, but don’t realize that the fear that they are operating on is ultimately harmful.

Who is your favorite character?

Danae is my favorite character; she reminds me of my own daughter, who is much younger, but still very truthful and spunky. Danae is the type of person that will hold a mirror up to you and make you look at yourself because sometimes we don’t see how we are unless someone shows us. Some readers thought she was a little too much, but as middle school teacher, I can tell you that teenagers are just like her. They have no filters and tell the truth!

How long does it take you to write this book?

According to word, about 3-4 months. Which for me is normal when the story gets flowing, and this one poured out of me like water.

What’s something that you wrote in a first draft that changed in the last draft of the story?

Well, Asante’s parental figures literally popped out of nowhere. They were not in the original plans I had for the story, but they fit in perfectly, Issac was supposed to be pursued by someone he wasn’t interested in, and Danae was going to pull a Rory Gilmore and end up staying all night with her boyfriend that allowed Asante to further push herself away from Issac, which would have made readers angry cuz she already took her sweet time letting him in, LOL. However, the last two storylines just didn’t settle well, and before I even wrote them out, there were scrapped.

What do you hope people get from this story?

I hope people finish the book and realize that they have to make peace with what broke their hearts before they can mend someone else’s and that taking risks is scary, but so worth it.
